To refine nasal architecture, surgery of the nose is performed. This surgery is capable of dramatically improving and balancing facial proportions. A good candidate for a rhinoplasty can be many things. A person who is unhappy with the shape and/or size of their nose is a prime candidate. Others include a person who has suffered an appearance altering injury to their nose or a person who has breathing problems limited to their nose. All people planning on receiving a nasal contouring procedure must have realistic expectations. Any person looking to receive this plastic surgery procedure must also have reached a mature facial growth and be in good emotional and physical health. During the initial consultation with a plastic surgeon, a patient will meet the surgeon as well as his or her staff. The cosmetic surgeon will look over what previous surgeries the patient has had, the patient’s medical history, any medications that the patient is currently on and he or she will also review the overall emotional and physical health of the patient. Along with these things, the cosmetic surgeon will also evaluate his or her patient’s skin quality. Photographs may or may not be taken for the patient’s medical record. The plastic surgeon will determine what the greatest benefit would come from and whether or not additional procedures would be necessary for the patient to achieve his or her desired results. Risks, recovery time, and limitations associated with nasal reshaping surgery will also be discussed. The surgeon’s patient coordinator will review all surgical costs and scheduling with the patient. The patient will require an anesthesia be administered during surgery. That procedure is almost always on an outpatient basis. Most patients will be released to go home on the day of their surgery. Some cartilage and bone will be reshaped or removed, but incisions and scars will only be made on the inside of the nose. A splint will be applied to the patient’s new nose to help it keep the new shape. Facial implants will be used to enhance and improve the facial structure as well as accent a rhinoplasty. These facial implants are able to bring balance to a person’s overall appearance as well as proportion facial traits. Placing of these implants can be done in the jaw, cheeks, or chin. Much like with rhinoplasty, during the initial consultation the patient and their plastic surgeon will go over medical history, medications, overall physical and mental health, etc. Again, photographs may be taken for medical records. Chin augmentation is used to create an overall balance in the face. The shape and size of these implants will greatly affect one’s profile. Chin augmentation is often recommended by cosmetic surgeons at the time of one’s nose job surgery. Cheek implants are used to give a more youthful appearance to one’s face while defining the cheekbones. This surgery may be recommended to enhance the results of plastic surgery procedures such as eyelid surgery or face lift surgery.
